I knew Fallout 3 was going to be good but I didn’t think it was going to be this awesome.  When I first started Fallout 3 I was playing Valkyria Chronicles on PS3 and I really wasn’t in the mood for another 25+ hour game.  I figured I would just finish the “intro/tutorial” phase of the game and then stop there.  Needless to say, I’ve stopped play Valkyria Chronicles…(don’t get me wrong, Valk. Chronicles is awesome too!).  Something about blasting mutants in the face and saving the world grabbed me and wouldn’t let go.

The Good, the Bad and the Neutral…

One thing I loved about Fallout 3 was the sheer amount choices you could make.  You could be a “good” person and help out your fellow man, OR you could be a complete bastard and loot/pillage everything in sight.  The main point is you can do what YOU want.  I loved this freedom of choice because it really helps you get into the whole story.  The character that you create really feels like YOU and it’s great to see how the choices you make affect your surroundings and the characters around you.   I took the “good” path and the townsfolk run up to me, praising me and give me precious items.  I haven’t really toyed around with being completely evil so I couldn’t tell you what they would do on the opposite end of the spectrum.  It’s just really entertaining to interact with people and see their reactions.

Guns lots of Guns…
Fallout 3 is an epic journey from start to finish.  The game has a HUGE plethora of items, weapons, armor, etc etc.  Just hunting for new gear and ammo is a treat in itself.  When I first started out, I had a cheesy Blue Vault 101 jumpsuit and a basic shotgun.  I thought I was rolling deep and king of the world…

But as you play the game its great to find new weapons and slowly upgrade yourself to be a 1 man army.  Toward the later half of my journey I was messing up super mutants wearing a Power Suit and blasting them away with my minigun.

This visible character progression is a really well done and makes the game fun.  If you like customizing your character with weapons and tweaking around with everything you will really enjoy Fallout 3.

VATs Firefights never get old…
Fallout 3 has a targeting system called VATS, which allows you to target specific parts of your enemy.  I LOVE when you target an enemy in VATs, everything slows down and the game shows off a slow-down cinematic view of the firefight.  From the first time I witnessed the VATs in action til my most recent battle with the Enclave, VATs has always been awesome!

Here is an example of what I mean:

Keep in mind this isn’t a special cinema scene, this video is a compilation of gameplay vids.

Just when you thought it was over…
The game has one of the best/worst endings that I have ever experienced.  The last couple of main story quests are linked so the end of the game comes without warning.  It was one of the best endings I’ve seen in a while because it concludes the story-line in a neat and logical manner.  The ending was satisfying but at the same time it was one of the worst endings because it felt abrupt and sudden.  I was trekking through the wastelands and I didn’t want to end my journey through the fallout 3 universe just yet.  I had a lot of exploring to do and more adventures to go on.

What’s great about Fallout 3 is the additional DLC that it has to offer.  Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe Fallout 3 has the most DLC than any other game in existence.  The original game is pretty long in its entirety and the DLC is just icing on the cake.  I’ve downloaded the “Broken Steel” DLC and it seamlessly extends your adventure.  Bethesda has also announced 2 more DLC coming within the next couple of weeks, “Point Lookout” and “Mother ship Zeta”.

When Fallout 3 was first announced I was pretty excited.  I wasn’t sure how Bethesda would do the transition to a full 3d universe and to be honest, I was very skeptical.  I’m glad to tell you that Fallout 3 is a solid gaming experience and definitely one of the best RPGs in this generation of gaming consoles.  I’ve left out so many little details that make the game wonderful but let me conclude by saying that this game is easily in my top 5 games for the for the Xbox 360.  If fact, I’m probably going to return to the “Wasteland” right now and mess up some super mutants.

This is any example of the VATs screen, and LOOK!  its a super mutant…

“SPOILER WARNING”
If you don’t want to ruin anything for your Fallout 3 experience don’t read pass this point.

For those of you who have beat the game.
I found this awesome video of Liberty Prime.  Wasn’t he the best?
