Recently, I’ve been giving game design and development great thought. Great games like The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim have gotten me thinking about what it would be like to design a fantastic game.

I  began a series called “Designing a Great Game.” Part 1 and Part 2 are already available, and I plan on adding more in the near future.

In the spirit of designing a great game, I decided to try and craft a mobile app. Mobile gaming is taking off, and it’s the perfect time for aspiring designers/developers to get in on the ground floor.

So, here’s my lil’ app that could:

Hello World Android App

Sure, it looks like a hot bowl of DOS crap, but it’s mine, dammit! And I’m pretty proud of it.

Next, I’ll have zombies and ninjas fightin’ up in here! :)

If you haven’t tried developing an app, it’s pretty simple. It takes a bit of leg work to get the programs installed–You need Java SDK, Android SDK, and an IDE like Eclipse for starters–but there are plenty of instructions available online.

Android Developers has step by step instructions on how to set up your development environment, and Beginning Android Application Development by Wei-Meng Lee is a great instructional book to get your started.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to create a game, now’s your chance to find out. Seize the day!
