What do you get when you mix Ghost in the Shell, AKIRA, and Counter-Strike?
The answer is “NeoTokyo”

My friend John had told me about an awesome trailer that he had seen this morning. After watching it tonight I just wanted to share it with everyone else.

NEOTOKYO is a first person shooter that provides a visceral & realistic combat experience in a rich futuristic setting. It is greatly influenced by our admiration for Masamune Shirow (GHOST IN THE SHELL) and Katsuhiro Otomo (AKIRA), and has been in production since October 2004.

What I really like about the trailer is the “Ghost in the Shell” theme. You can even see a Tachikoma at the end of the trailer!

Imagine kicking ass, just like the major… soon you’ll be able to.

The story of NeoTokyo

NEOTOKYO takes place about 30-40 years from now in a Japan that has drifted into social/political strife due to the inevitable stresses that come from changing times. The Japanese government is grappling with intensified external (Asia geopolitics) and internal (economic/social) problems, and there is mounting pressure from within Japan to return to the days when it exerted influence through military power and strength. A failed legislative push to alter the Japanese Constitution (allowing the Japanese military to engage in offensive actions outside of the country) leads to an attempted military coup by members of Japan’s armed forces (GSDF). The coup fails, but was very close to succeeding. In an effort to suppress further coup attempts, Japan’s Prime Minister forms a branch inside the Interior Ministry’s National Security Forces (NSF) called GROUP SIX. They answer directly to the Prime Minister and are sworn to protect the Japanese Constitution at all costs. They immediately begin to hear rumours of a rogue element of the GSDF Special Forces (JINRAI) maneuvering for a second coup attempt. These JINRAI are Special Operations Group 43 (SOG43), fierce nationalist loyal to their love of country, and a desire to put Japan back into a position of strength and power.

This begins the war in the shadows between the NSF and JINRAI.

2 awesome facts that I also wanted to point out is that “NeoTokyo” will be FREE and the music for the game is absolutely amazing. If you like the music from the trailer you will love the rest of the songs…Visit the main webpage for more music samples.

For more info on this awesome game, check out their main page: http://www.neotokyohq.com/index.html

Special thanks to John P. for showing me this

Ok, so I made a rule to myself that in 2009, wriXeL will post articles every Sunday night. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep this up throughout the year. So last Wednesday I was burning a copy of Ghost in the Shell, Stand Alone Complex, for one of my close friends, La Femme Reaper (check out her blog http://www.lafemmereaper.com). While I was burning the anime I remember that the show has one of the coolest snipers. As I was burning the series I got distracted and started thinking about all the other cool snipers in Anime.

Wiki defines a sniper as:

“A sniper is an individual, usually a soldier or law enforcement agent, who specializes in shooting targets with high-precision rifles from very long distances, usually from a concealed location. Most are skilled in carrying out stealth and camouflage tactics on a battlefield zone. Military snipers are also adept at carrying out methods of infiltration, reconnaissance, and observation techniques.”

I’m going to loosely use this definition for my top ten list. After going through a whole bunch of animes I narrowed it down to my list to 5 snipers. This list was pretty fun to make and I hope you enjoy reading it.

#5 on our list is:

Vash the Stampede

Vash comes from an anime called “Trigun”, which aired in the late 90s. Now I know Vash isn’t your typical “sniper”, but I feel that because his accuracy with his revolver allows him to be placed on this list. The story behind Vash is actually long and confusing so I’ll just sum it up quickly: Vash is an alien life form on a quest to save humans from his evil brother. Now the anime doesn’t really explain why he is so skilled with firearms but then again does it really matter? Regardless, Vash is a force to be reckoned with.
