What is the purpose of faith? Fulfillment? Peace of mind? The same question should be made of trust, a “lower” level of faith: how much trust should we have in each other?

“A Horse of Different Color” is light on action but heavy with very important discussions/examples of faith.

I’m glad to see that Dexter attends the baptism led by Brother Sam; the scene began the discussion on faith and belief. Dexter notices that belief creates fulfillment for Brother Sam, not “reality.” Brother Sam believes that salvation comes from God, so he feels good about himself regardless of what the reality may be (he’s an ex-con, a murderer, etc.). This fascinates Dexter and leads him to begin questioning his own beliefs.

When Dexter explains that the Earth’s rotating on its axis explains the rising and setting of the sun, Brother Sam doesn’t’ skip a beat: “So you do believe in something greater than yourself.” What else can Dexter do but pause and smirk. One point for Brother Sam.

If only Brother Sam knew that Dexter believes in a higher power too: the Dark Passenger.

In the crime scene involving the horses and mannequins, we get our second mention of Rudy, Dexter’s Brother, a.k.a. the Ice Truck Killer. I’m not exactly sure what’s brewing with all of these direct references to other serial killers, but I like it. I hope it leads to something. Just what do the writers have in mind?

Speaking of the other serial killers, what’s the deal with Ryan? She’s got an unhealthy fascination with the Trinity and several other cases Dexter has been involved in. I don’t buy the whole having to pay for rent excuse, and neither does Masuka. He gained a lot more respect from me for sticking to his principles. I expected him to fold when Ryan tried to flirt with him, but Masuka’s got some self-control! Let’s see if this is the last we see of Ryan . . .

We also have a bit of theme going on with Matthews crapping on LaGuerta and LaGuerta crapping on Deb. Ah, politics! Deb has a certain amount of faith in La Guerta, which is why she listens to her advice when LaGuerta tells her to “be herself” during her press conference. LaGuerta definitely wanted Deb to fail, but thankfully that didn’t happen. Matthews actually congratulates Deb! This is one triangle of power that’s going to get a lot more complicated as the season progresses.

I also like Mike so far; he speaks his mind, telling Deb she dresses pretty much like a cowgirl. And she actually cares about his opinion enough to start wearing a suit! There seems to be something blossoming between the two of them. It’ll be interesting to see what develops.

Plus, Quinn hates him, and anyone who gets on Quinn’s nerves this season is an automatic favorite of mine. Quinn can smoke as many blunts as he wants: he has a long way to gain my respect again.

So, Geller, Travis’s mentor, may in fact be a real person because Mike finds a website supposedly run by him, and Geller is I.D.’d as a professor who went underground a few years ago.

However, I still can’t shake the feeling that that Geller exists only in Travis’s head; in the diner, the waitress comes over and offers Travis coffee but doesn’t make eye contact with the mentor at all or ask if he wants anything to eat or drink. It’s starting to get all Fight Club-esque. I’m not complaining; I like the execution so far. It isn’t simply someone talking in his ear like Dexter and Harry. The cuts on the mannequin’s body are different, which causes Dexter to believe it’s two different people committing.

Also, the waitress doesn’t even look at Geller when she’s tied up on the kitchen floor. Just what is going on?

Back to Brother Sam; it seems like he’s quickly becoming a mentor to Dexter. It’s good to see Dexter find a guide besides his father. Lela was a love interest/kindred spirit, and Miguel was a “friend.” But Dexter hasn’t had someone to look up to and learn from. He’s always been the teacher. Now it seems as though he has someone he can trust and put his faith in. Who better than Brother Sam? They’re both born in blood. But Brother Sam seems normal, seems changed. Dexter wants to know what caused it.

I truly hope this relationship doesn’t turn sour like Dexter’s other friendships.

And Dexter praying? Holy crap! God seems to work in mysterious ways, whether through coffee cups in a vending machine or getting an atheist serial killer to talk to him. It was great to see Dexter genuinely relieved and thanking God when he found out that Harrison was ok. It was so out of character and smells of personal growth. We might be watching the birth of Brother Dexter.

I’m interested to see what kind of discussion Travis and Dexter have over the course of the season now that Dexter has seen him. Will Dexter find a way to reconcile that little bit of religious faith that’s growing inside of him with the Dark Passenger? Only time will tell . . .

Overall, this was a great episode of Dexter that dealt with the fascinating issue of faith through the eyes of a faithless serial killer.

Score: 9.5/10

Please guys, tell me if I’m crazy or onto something: is Geller, Travis’s Mentor, real or not?

I often ask myself “Nacho, what would it be like to play Arkanoid in the year 4026 while tripping on space ecstasy?” “You handsome devil,” I reply. “Only time will tell.” Well, the time has come.

Shatter is a PSN downloadable game by developer Sidhe which takes the premise of old school block breaking games like Breakout and Arkanoid and turns them on their heads with beautiful HD graphics and some new gameplay elements not traditionally seen in this type of game. However, don’t file this under “another old school remake”. Shatter cranks things up to eleven.

The basic premise is simple: clear each level of the colorful blocks opposite of you by bouncing your ball off of your flat spaceship. In Shatter though, you are actually controlling a “kinetic energy harvester robot thingy“, your “balls” are actually missiles and “blocks” come in a variety of shapes and sizes, each with its own behavior and physics. Yeah, I said it. PHYSICS! This is actually where Shatter sets itself on a podium and beats its chest with the fury and strength of ten gorillas.

Blocks can behave in a few ways. Some blocks are your standard fare of motionless target, while others will tumble towards you should you destroy their support blocks. There are also blocks that multiply in a cell-like fashion, explode on impact or take off like rockets to create some dazzling fireworks displays. There are even blocks that project a force that can alter the trajectory of your missile, which serves to complicate things a bit more. Your robot is capable of exerting the same forces as well, either repelling or attracting forces, which alters the trajectory of not only your missile(s) but of blocks in the level. This provides for some dynamic play and some especially hectic yet fun moments on the more difficult levels. Another element added into equation are “shards” that are collected from destroyed blocks which increase your energy meter, thereby allowing you to either project a shield to protect you from other falling blocks, as they can stun you, or fire off a flashy slow motion salvo of laser blasts to clear a level faster. You also have the option to release multiple missiles at once, provided you have any reserves, should you decide to ramp things up and attempt to clear a level faster and rack up bigger combo points. Suddenly you’re not just sitting there waiting for a stupid ball to come bounce off of your head, are you?

There are also power-ups to gather which can boost your score multiplier or alter the properties of your missiles, but the other unique thing that Shatter throws at you to mix things up are end world boss battles, which force you to change gears a bit and actively strategize on how to attack your robotic enemy’s weak point by using force techniques and timing.

I don’t know if you can tell how hard my nipples are over this game, but the last thing I’ll tell you about is how fantastic the soundtrack is. Sidhe really did a great job here of getting electronic artist Module to come up with amazing ear candy to play this game along to (which you can download or stream for free here). Seriously, it’s fantastic. I always find myself tapping my feet and bobbing my head to the beats as I play this for hours on end.

I LIED! THERE’S STILL MORE!

In addition to the block-breaking story mode, there is a boss rush mode which pits you against all ten of the game’s bosses one after the other and an eyeball-exploding bonus mode which has you keeping multiple missiles in play for as long as possible while a brain-melting space vortex visualization cycles in the background in an effort to vaporize your synapses. Both these extra modes and the story mode have leaderboard support as well, so that you can easily get into pissing contests over your high scores and fastest times with your friends and internet strangers alike.

If you’re a fan of Arkanoid/Breakout, then you shouldn’t hesitate to pick up Shatter, but even if you’re not, at $7.99 on the PSN store, Shatter is well worth the price of admission.

Thanks to my unwavering persistence and a little bit of Twitter sleuthing, I was able to get my hands on an Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta code and I decided I would share with all of you kind people my impressions. Aren’t I nice?

In case you haven’t played the first Uncharted, I’ll give you a brief rundown on what it’s about. Uncharted is basically the video game equivalent of a blockbuster action/adventure movie (aren’t they all nowadays?). It didn’t do anything revolutionary in terms of gameplay or subject matter, as it borrowed from many creative sources. Think Tomb Raider platforming and Gears of War shooting/cover system with an Indiana Jones movie veneer. On paper it sounds really derivative, but the fact of the matter is that the game was incredibly polished and had excellent dialogue and voice acting. Nathan Drake, the game’s protagonist and smart-aleck hero, is admittedly one of the best video game characters of all time with regard to personality. Cutting to the chase, Uncharted had no multiplayer component as it was a superb single player adventure. This time around, Naughty Dog is ramping things up by including online competitive and cooperative multiplayer. This irked me as I’m generally against including multiplayer for every single game that comes out. On the business end, companies like it because it’s believed to extend the longevity of the game as consumers are always trying to get the most bang for their buck, but no matter what, this will always compromise the single player experience and overall development to some degree and, more often than not, contribute little or nothing to the end product. So, what do I think about my time with the beta? Come here and sit on papa Nacho’s lap, and I’ll tell you all about it! (Don’t worry; those are just my keys in my pocket).

On the competitive end of things, the beta featured Standard Deathmatch and Plunder game modes. I tend to find Deathmatch a bit boring in third person games with shooting, unless the game is really doing something special with its mechanics (see: Red Faction: Guerrilla). That being said, I’m inclined to categorize Uncharted 2 a third person action/adventure game with shooting, as opposed to a third person shooter because the game isn’t really all about the shooting. Given this and the fact that the game also doesn’t bring anything truly different to the table (yet), I don’t feel like this mode really complements or contributes much to the Uncharted experience. Uncharted 2 does try to spice things up with the equivalent of a perks system based on your multiplayer rank, which allows you to equip two different types of combat bonuses such as increased accuracy for a certain weapon class, bonus ammo, etc., but it just seems like very standard fare. I didn’t attain a very high rank, so I was only able to access these basic perks, but perhaps on release they will tweak the system a bit to include some more compelling, game changing abilities. By no means though does Uncharted 2 feel like a drag. Its shooting and cover mechanic is competent, in fact it plays extremely well, but as I said before, the Deathmatch experience isn’t really going to wow you, even with Uncharted’s Tomb Raider-esque acrobatics coming into play on the maps. Did he say Tomb Raider? Yes, I did. Tomb Raider minus the boobs. What I mean to say is that there is some verticality to the levels as players can climb structures and ledges to help them get to good vantage points which creates potential for advantages over enemies below, but I still found that most of the action ended up taking place on the ground anyway.

Plunder mode on the other hand was a bit more interesting. Plunder is essentially Capture the Flag, but instead of the aforementioned flag, teams are struggling to return a piece of treasure at the center of the map to their home base. This mode can get pretty frenetic as once someone has hold of the treasure, they move much slower and are limited to using only their handgun, making them ripe for the killing. However, the player carrying the treasure can throw it to keep the up the pace of things. The Plunder matches I played ended up being the most fun as they kind of became a game of Hot Potato, but with bullets and grenades. HIGH FIVE!

On the cooperative side, you can join up with up to two others players and play through a non-story mode mission. This involves getting from one end of the level to the other and killing enemy AI along the way. The only true co-op mechanic is a prompt for the player to press a button when standing in a highlighted area to either lift some rubble or push something out of a window at the end of a section, which then allows players to move on to the next area of the level. This felt pretty poorly implemented. I felt that the way Resident Evil 5 was structured, it incorporated a sense of co-operative play very organically, but Uncharted 2’s approach to co-op felt a bit tacked on. It was more like three individuals versus the enemy AI. I hope some serious effort goes into improving this mode on release.

Well that’s the end of story time. I guess my verdict on the multiplayer component is that I could take it or leave it. I wouldn’t be upset if it wasn’t there, but it’s nice that it is and there is potential for some fun. Perhaps the inclusion of some more interesting game modes and some tweaks to the co-op mode will improve the overall experience and keep it from simply being a brief diversion and a marketing bullet point. I only hope that development of multiplayer didn’t translate to too large a sacrifice in the single player experience because that’s what Uncharted really is about after all.

Quite possibly the stupidest game ever made…

Ok, so this will be the shortest review in the history of wrixel.

This is mainly due to the fact that having forced myself to play this game, I don’t want to waste any more time on it.

A couple months back I commented how I thought the Onechanbara trailer was horrendous.
Regardless I decided to give the game a try. Scantily clad women hunting zombies, SURE thing right? WRONG. While the game succeeds in luring gamers with pretty girls, boob friendly physics and pretty CGs, it fails horribly in everything else.

The first area where Onechanbara fails is in Gameplay. The game is a basic hack & slasher but it even fails to keep THAT entertaining. “Combos” are uninspired and bosses are a joke. Seriously, slicing a monsters ass for 4 minutes is not fun. The controls are pretty straight forward and the camera is pretty good for the most part but the game is just boring. There is nothing motivating me to get to the next level.

Check out this video…its basically this throughout the WHOLE GAME.

The music and soundfxs are annoying and don’t really vary from level to level.

The graphics aren’t anything special. In fact the zombies don’t even look complete. Only the main Character looks great (obviously she’s the only reason why anyone would buy this game). I wouldn’t be surprised if you said it was on PS2.

Bottom Line:
Am I being to critical with this game? Maybe. The game is boring and offers nothing but hot virtual babes. If you need a virtual hottie fix, get DOA Beach volleyball, or SB3. I mean if you are going to be a perv might as well go all out.

I DO NOT recommend picking this game up. I’ve already tainted my poor xbox with such trash…oh the sacrifices I make…

Let me start out by saying, I love the zelda series and twilight princess was a fantastic game. However, how many times would you wander around in zelda hoping to find a hidden cave that had….the Flame sword of hyrule or Long bow of piercing? How about side quests that actually could hold their own regarding story and plot? You might say “well thats not what a zelda game is” or something to that degree. And you’d be right, but it’s the route I wish, and many others, wished the last zelda game had taken. Well, forget about Link (yeah I said it!) Because the Xbox360 has your answer with Fable 2.

Story:

The story in Fable 2 takes place 500 years after the first game, where heroes are legends of the past and technology has taken over as societies idol. Of note, you don’t have to be familiar with the first game (I never had the original Xbox) to enjoy this one although there are some inside jokes/familiar regions that players familiar with the original might recognize. Without major spoilers, you start out as a child and witness an event which years later as an adult propels you into the main quest. The story progression and dialogue (more on that later) are well paced and you can choose to run straight through the main quest of the game (if you do however you will be missing >75% of what the game has to offer) or take your time and perform various side quests, open demon doors, interact with villagers, and explore various caves. Now, I cannot talk about the story without discussing the importance of the impact your decisions will make as to whether you play as “good” or “evil”. Without giving anything away, your alignment to good/evil doesn’t alter the progression of the main quest too much until the very end, however everything else will see a major impact. For example, making decisions with most side quests will determine the award your given, whether certain characters survive, or even if certain regions exist. To give you an example, during my play through I worked for bandits and killed an important farmer. Years later, in my game his farm remains just a small empty shack. On the other hand, upon discussing the game with my cousin and brother whom both let him live, I was told that his farm will flourish and eventually turn into a large settlement. It will also affect how villagers respond to you and item prices in shops (i.e. you get a discount for being feared or loved) This aspect is quite new to most games and very well delivered in Fable 2. Don’t worry, you can always become good again if you feel you are too evil by doing various deeds and vice versa. However decisions you already made won’t be reversed.

Now questing isn’t the only aspect to Fable 2, and I was surprised on how addicted I became to making money via various jobs and buying/selling property and businesses (probably because I am a horrible business man in real life). Another moment that stood out for me, was when I returned from a long journey of questing and my young daughter ran up to me and happily greeted me for the first time (when I left she was just a baby in a crib; and no you can’t hurt your kids!). No matter how evil my character was, that moment brought a smile to my face. That, and sleeping with two hookers at once.

Being evil affects gameplay elements as well as your appearance in game.

Gameplay:

The gameplay is very simple and well executed with each button devoted to one aspect of fighting. X button is for melee, Y is for shooting, and B is for magic. The upgrade system is standard RPG, and I felt it was well balanced. I simply loved it when I upgraded my shooting ability enough to pull off decapitating head-shots and groin shots! You upgrade using experience orbs you get during enemy encounters or via potions bought/found int eh environment.

Graphics:

The graphics in Fable 2 are beautiful, with a colorful, storybook feel to it without looking childish at all and maintains a serious tone. The game has many variety of regions and stunning vistas here you’ll want to stop and just pan the camera around to take in the view. The major difference in comparison to other top tier real time RPG’s (i.e. Oblivion and Fallout 3) is that you can’t go to every part of the region you see and most areas are somewhat linear, very similar to the layout of the worlds in ocarina of time or twilight princess. Now, I didn’t feel this detracted from the game at all, as there are many areas to explore and the worlds themselves are huge (I’d say its about 3x larger than Twilight princess’s game world).

The world are large and beautiful.

Sound:

This I believe is Fable 2′s greatest strength. The voice acting is amazing and you will find yourself imitating all the varieties of British accents that you hear. It also makes the delivery of the story that much more genuine, engaging, and believable. Lionhead studios recorded hours and hours of dialogue and I never found it repetitive or boring. The sound effects are well done and you’ll love the sound of your unsheathing your steel while running after some poor defenseless villagers. The music is also top notch and adds to the experience depending on the region you are in. It never detracted from the experience and I actually downloaded a few tracks from iTunes off the Fable 2 game soundtrack.

Bang for your buck:

The main quest can probably be done in <10 hours if you don’t stop to do anything else. There is so much more to the Fable 2 world to keep you busy that completing the majority of these things will clock you in between 20-30 hours. I suggest disabling the yellow trail which will always guide you to your objective, to provide a more adventurous feel (i.e. you‘ll be more likely to explore if its off). In addition to that, some quests will only unlock after completing the main game. And if that’s not enough, Lionhead studios has already announced an entirely new region with new story/side quests, weapons/items and clothing when they release the first downloadable content on Xbox live with “Knothole island” later this month (Dec. 18th).

Overall:

Despite some shortcomings with the main campaign length Fable 2 is a a deep game with many rich features. wriXeL highly recommends this game! BUY THIS GAME!!!

-Co-op mode only allows one person to play as their main character, while the other person chooses a generic pre-made character. Overall, I enjoyed playing the game alone anyway.

-sometimes controlling your character can be difficult with the analog stick and you can sometimes get “stuck” (i.e. glitch) between objects in the environment

-There are some gltiches with activating quests or retrieving items (I did not encounter any of these on my play-through) that gamers are reporting, however a patch is already in the works from Lionhead.

A brief review of the film "THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME".

The film revolves around an average high school girl named, Makoto Konno. The beginning of the movie shows Makoto’s mundane life as a student. Things soon spice up as she randomly gains the ability to “leap” into the past. Makoto immediately starts abusing her powers to ace tests, bypass accidents, and avoid awkward situations. However, as she continues to exploit her powers she realizes that her actions have an adverse affects on the people around her. With a limited number of “leaps” left Makoto tries to save her friends and fix the problems she has caused.

The movie has a “Hayao Miyazaki” feel (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away). Its light hearted, entertaining and the animation is excellent. It kinda reminds me of the “Butterfly Effect” minus Ashton Kutcher and the craziness. o.O !!

wriXeL gives “THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME” a 8.17 out of 10. You should definitely watch this movie!

Here is a sample trailer that the wriXeL crew has made:

BTW the film will premiere domestically at the 2008 NY COMIC CON. If you are attending the convention I highly recommend watching this film.

This review contains many spoilers. If you plan on watching the film and want a quick review without spoilers please read the bullet points and the “BOTTOM LINE” below.

________________________________________________________________________

Cloverfield is a unique monster movie that sets itself apart from others in the genre. JJ Abrams has once again produced amazing work. The whole concept of a monster attack from the first person point of view is brilliant. Although this brilliant idea works for the majority of the movie…in some scenes it just doesn’t. A lot of the film’s strengths were also its weaknesses.

I am content with the Cloverfield monster. You clearly saw what it was and yet you STILL didn’t know what you were looking at. The monster didn’t look cheesy or fake. Not only was the monster scary but the little creatures that fell from it were ever freakier. The special effects for the movie were wonderful! Building explosions looked real and the military action sequences were very convincing.

The main problem I had with Cloverfield was the first person point of view.

Motion SICKNESS WARNING.

I last experienced movie motion sickness during “The Blair Witch Project”. I felt like throwing up then, and during Cloverfield I felt like throwing up again. Maybe it was JJ Abrams idea to have you feel as nauseated as the people trying to escape. If you’re made of the tough stuff and aren’t affected by motion sickness then ignore this comment. If you are weak sauce like me, you’ve been warned.

There were a couple scenes in the movie I that I really liked. A great scene in the movie was when the girl exploded (By great I mean gross). I remembered her from “Mean Girls” and I thought she deserved better than that. I mean come on she was Janis Ian. It was deliciously scary when the “little monsters” were attacking them in the train tunnels. It reminded me of the “Descent” and how scared I was then.

I had a couple small issues with some scenes in the movie. Robert Hawkins loses his brother during the film and has a small meltdown. After 20 minutes or so he pulls himself together and runs off to save Beth. I’m sorry but if I lost my brother I don’t think I would be able to function for a quite some time. I’d be too damn devastated to try to be a hero. Towards the end of the movie they save, Beth McIntyre. Her apartment almost collapses, she gets impaled on a metal beam and she then survives a helicopter crash. Holy shit, only in a movie folks. J

The humor didn’t work during the movie. People are dying around you and you have the inclination to pop a joke? No. They should’ve cut this out. It generated a few chuckles in the audience but I think it brought the audience back to reality and back to realizing that they are watching a monster flick. The same comedian, Hud, also FILMS the entire attack? Bull shit. If I was under attack I would be running as fast as hell to get out of there. What was his motivation to keep filming? “So others will know how it went down?” Yea right, a real person would say, “Fuck this I’m getting out of here”

A lot of people had issues with the ending but I thought it was good. Although they died in an abrupt fashion, they died together and they got to say what they wanted to say. At that point if they survived I would’ve been pissed.

_____________________________________________________________________

Here is a quick summary (in nice bullet points for all you lazy people):

PROS

- The monster doesn’t disappoint. It was actually pretty cool.

- Special effects were wonderful.

- It was unbelievably realistic. You felt as if you were trying to escape from NY,

- The movie had a lot of cool NY landmarks I recognized.

- The ending was good in my opinion.

CONS

- Motion Sickness Warning. I seriously thought I was going to hurl.

- Super Human survivability. Some people just don’t die! J

- The humor just didn’t work with the film.

- The acting was decent but I think they could’ve shown more sadness and desperation.

Bottomline:

Coverfield is definitely a unique experience. If you can overcome the motion sickness and ignore some weak acting/humor you are in for a terrifying experience. The special effects are topnotch and monsters kicks ass.

Cloverfield gets a 7.3 out of 10.

Over the holiday break the wriX crew started an anime called D.Gray-Man. D-G Man is a manga/anime that has been out for about a year and is still ongoing.

At first we were reluctant to start D.GM because we were so far behind (I hate catching up in anime). However due to its rave reviews and the fact that it’s still popular after 143 mangas / 64 anime episodes, we decided to give it a try. We are currently on different episodes but I’ve watched about 21 episodes of the Anime and from what I’ve seen so far, I think the show is GREAT!

I really like it. It’s not legendary but it’s pretty entertaining.

I’ll try to summarize the plot it simple bullet points:

· New kid on the block named, Allen Walker (girly looking guy above)joins this badass group of people called the Black Order

· Black Order consists of Exorcists who have special powers and kill demons throughout the world.

· Demons are made by this Fat Ass Clown Named the Millennium Earl, who I find to look hilarious @ times ^^;

· Exorcists get their powers from things called, “Innocence”. Fragments of a stone or something…they go around the world looking for new people to join their gang.

· The Millennium Earl has special family members who has crazy powers as well… they are the evil equivalents to the Exorcists.

Bottom line:

Exorcists vs Demons = Good Times. The show features interesting characters and typical witty Japanese dialogue. The animation is your typical “TV Tokyo” quality but it doesn’t disappoint. Although we had varying reviews, the overall wriXeL review is 8.11 / 10.00.

Disclaimer: We are not up to date with the show so our review is subject to change.
